Trump’s Effect On Google Analytics Data
“Secret.ɢoogle.com You are invited! Enter only with this ticket URL. Copy it. Vote for Trump!”
Have you seen this message in your Google Analytics datasets as of late? Don't stress! You're not the only one.
In Australia, we have noticed this spam traffic in the majority of the Freemium Google Analytics accounts that we manage. We can only presume that this may have affected millions, if not thousands of accounts across the globe.
So, what exactly does this data mean and why is it showing in your Google Analytics account?
Firstly, the good news is that Donald Trump has not hacked into your Google Analytics account! How do we know? through the strategic analysis of our Australian based accounts, we were able to trace the data and locate Russia as the primary country of source. We can also confirm that this traffic has originated as referral spam from various sources - not Trump himself.
These spam messages are included into your data set, by spammers using bots. Spammers use spam bots, to create links to the root domains (or websites) that contain tagging parameters (UTM Tagging). These parameters are used by Analytical tools such as Google Analytics, to report on the source and medium of the incoming traffic.
Because of this, it is important to remember to be careful! If you perform a search for the Secret.ɢoogle.com website, you will be redirected to a website with the page titled “Secret.ɢoogle.com voted for Trump by all my scripts, every my byte, in tens of millions google analytics accounts”.
We recommend that you don't access this website. While we can't be sure whether it has spyware / malware material or not, it's better to be safe than sorry! Instead, we suggest to implement Advanced Filters and/or Advanced Segments to get rid of this noise and to report on meaningful data.
You can find a guide on how to implement Advanced Filters here, to exclude referral spam from your Google Analytics Account. This way, you can keep your account free of Donald Trump Spam data!
