New Client: The University of Wollongong

Internetrix is excited to welcome the University of Wollongong as one of our newest clients, with its Public Affairs office choosing Connect to solve their messaging and media communication challenges.
With more than 2000 staff spread across seven campuses and education centres, the University of Wollongong has an extensive footprint in its communities, whether they be in Dubai or back home on the NSW South Coast. With this kind of community relevance, the University requires a proactive communications strategy, particularly when engaging with the media.
Given the time-critical nature of many issues the University responds to - for example, Associate Professor Ted Bryant from the Faculty of Science was Australia's primary spokesman on the recent Asian tsunami disaster - Public Affairs was finding itself held back by an antiquated fax system for distributing press releases. While cost and convenience were problems for the previous, manual system, the reliability issues associated with manually sending faxes to distribution lists meant the University had a problem that more equipment alone could not overcome.
"Our geographical spread, combined with the various ways we interact with our communities - as an employer, an educator, a research centre and more - means we don't communicate with the same set media channels every time we issue a release", explains Bernie Goldie, Media Manager for the University. "With so many media outlets with different profiles, we needed a system that could both manage a database of contacts, as well as ease the problem of distributing up to a hundred fax or email dispatches at a time", continues Mr Goldie. "Connect has enabled us to overcome both of these challenges in one, streamlined and integrated system".
The system works by capturing the contact details of media outlets in the Connect database. This stores names, numbers and email addresses of media contacts, and includes segmenting features, so that UOW media staff can quickly target releases at various local, national and international outlets. By typing in some text, or uploading a file, the UOW team can, at the click of a mouse, dispatch dozens of completely paperless, electronic faxes.
Mr Goldie summaries the success of the project, saying "we were looking at having to install more lines to send out our releases - this new solution has enabled us to avoid that cost, and by streamlining the process with an integrated database and dispatch tool, we're also able to be more targeted, while saving paper at the same time."
