With the growing proliferation of wireless broadband internet access in Australia, there’s a somewhat new threat lurking in the online world.
Security experts warn that people are gaining access to the net via other people’s unsecured wireless networks.
This internet “theft” involves intruders logging on to unsecured wireless networks and surfing the internet for free.
What may seem like a relatively harmless thing can easily turn into a real disaster, causing slower download times and sky-high bills for otherwise naïve broadband subscribers.
Kim Valois, global head of security at Computer Sciences Corporation, says that most wireless home networks do not even have passwords. Pretty risky considering thieves need only a wireless card in their laptops to gain access.
And with 200,000 wireless networks in Australian homes, this makes many Australians vulnerable.
To protect yourself, make sure to install a firewall. Most wireless hubs come with the technology to ensure you are secure. It’s just a matter of using it.
