Step 1: Use an anti-virus programMost of you probably know, but as a little refresher, a virus is a program that runs on your computer without your permission. It often means that somebody else is using your computer. Install an anti-virus program and keep it up to date!
Step 2: Patch your programsMany programs, even Microsoft Windows, have vulnerabilities that intruders can manipulate to gain access to your computer. Patches eliminate these problems. Most software vendors will let you know when you need to install a patch and tell you where you can find that patch online.
Step 3: Be cautious of email attachmentsOften unsuspecting email attachments turn out to be viruses. Beware. Make sure any email attachment you open is from a trusted source.
Step 4: Install a firewallFirewalls are designed to keep outsiders out. With a firewall, it makes it extremely difficult for intruders to get into your computer.
Step 5: Create Backups
Always make back-up copies of your important files and documents so that if something is destroyed or lost you’ll still have a copy.
Step 6: Use strong passwords
Strong passwords make it harder for intruders to access your computer and other online resources. Try a combination of letters (both lower and upper case) and numbers.
Step 7: Be careful when downloading files or installing programs
Not all online programs and downloads are what they claim to be—often viruses are disguised as otherwise innocent files or programs. Take care when downloading anything and be sure to get programs and files from trusted, legitimate sources.
