There is just so much happening this month that we couldn’t limit our technology update to just one story. As a result, we’ve got 3 stories on our website, covering recent happenings in the internet security world.

Our first story is about a company run by a familiar scammer, who has sent out letters to thousands of domain name holders in an attempt to cash in on people’s uncertainty about the internet. The scam involves getting unsuspecting domain name owners to pay vastly inflated amounts for registration and renewal services.

Our second article is a warning to anyone using the internet to sell products or services internationally. The ANZ Bank has informed federal police about a scam where sellers, rather than buyers, are the victim of international fraud, costing many innocent parties thousands of dollars.

Our third article is a must for anyone using a home internet connection with Windows. A recent study by the Honeynet project has found that there are more than 1 million “zombie” or “bot” computers on the internet, most of them running Windows XP or Windows 2000. These systems, compromised primarily through known vulnerability in Windows, are able to be controlled through a “botnet” to commit a range of online crimes, while keeping the real hackers identify safe.
