Harnessing the Power of Google
30 May 2003

In case you were one of the 3 out of 10 people who don’t use Google, you probably should know that it is an internet search engine that searches 3.8 trillion web pages. It is also used for more than 65% of all web searches, and is popular because of it’s fast, quick and intuitive search mechanism and uncluttered presentation.
Online advertising has long been outside the reach of most businesses – banner ads on Yahoo!, for example, have an entry price in the thousands.
Imagine if you could advertise where two thirds of all internet users searched, but for a starting price less than a main meal at your local Thai restaurant?
Dream no more – the answer is Google AdWords.
Google AdWords™ is a performance-based, self-service online advertising program based on cost-per-click (CPC) pricing. With AdWords, advertisers’ sponsored links appear to the right of Google's web-wide search results and are closely targeted by keyword to match the information users are searching for.
This is enhanced by the fact Google now have a search engine specifically for Australia, www.google.com.au – the great deal has just gotten better for Aussie companies online.
As with all good things, however, there is a down-side. Google AdWords, while inexpensive are also performance-based, which means if no-one clicks on your advert, then it does not keep showing up. This means crafting your listing is more and art or science than simply showing up with your credit card, however, it does mean that the advertising medium is trusted as being relevant and that is where the value really comes in.
